Gym Review of the Sonnenalp Resort in Ofterschwang, Germany

We visited the Sonnenalp hotel near Ofterschwang in Bavaria, Germany. This hotel has a lot to offer within their facilities and I used their gym almost daily for 2 weeks.

When planning this trip, I had relied on the fitness facility to upkeep my training routines so due to the length of our stay, it was a fairly important factor.

The space is beautiful and well thought out (the hotel underwent a major renovation and expansion not too long ago) and offers ample room for guests who visit.

It is fairly well used so almost every time I was present, there were several other people there. Towels and water are provided as well as cleaning wipes.

Ample cardio equipment is available and quite a good selection of strength training machines. You can certainly do some great full body workouts using machines alone with the options available.

On the side, there is a smaller area with a suspension trainer, wall rack, dip and pull up station, bench and free weights. This area could ideally be bigger since it gets cramped as soon as more than one person is training there. However, it’s well equipped and has a great view.

As many hotel gyms, the dumbbell set was too limiting (only went up to 12 kilograms) which is a pet peeve of mine. A minimum set of up to 20kgs, preferably even more, should be the standard but is unfortunately often not the case.

Overall, this was an excellent gym especially if you are planning on having a long stay!

Well maintained and clean
Both a well rounded assortment in cardio as well as strength training devices

The hotel could expand the hours of operation for the ones among us who like to (or are forced to) work out early in the morning or after dinner.
The dumbbells should go much heavier than what’s currently present.
